Michael Houstoun - Gigs

On this page you will find detailed information regarding upcoming performances and other professional appearances.

Sunday 16 March     Recital in Palmerston North
For this recital I will play some of the most beautiful and profound music in my repertoire. To start there will be the Four Impromptus, Op.90 by Franz Schubert and these will be followed by four songs by George Gershwin in brilliant arrangements by great American virtuoso, Earl Wild - Lady Be Good, The Man I Love, I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You. For the second half I have chosen Schubert's final sonata, Sonata in B flat, D.960, music that goes directly to the heart, affirming, cathartic, a necessary corrective in our turbulent world.
This concert is at the Globe theatre and begins at 2.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Globe box office or online at globetheatre.co.nz

Monday 24 March     Recital in Nelson
I will play the same programme as above in the magnificent NCMA auditorium, a favourite venue since I was a teenager.
Tickets can be obtained at the NCMA box office or online at ncma.nz Start time is 7.30pm.

Thursday 3 April     Recital in Cambridge
The above programme will get a third outing at the Cambridge Autumn Festival. This will be at a new venue for me, The Woolshed at Te Awa Lifecare Village. Tickets will be available from Paper Plus Cambridge or online at www.humanatix.co.nz The concert starts at 7pm.

Saturday 22 March     National Concerto Competition final
In the middle of these concerts is a great event, an event which played an important part in my youthful development, the National Concerto Competition. This year’s final is lining up to be particularly exciting with three of the best piano concertos on offer - Tchaikowsky No.1, Prokofiev No.3 and Brahms No.2. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will accompany the soloists conducted by James Judd. I will be there and will play a couple of duets with my excellent colleague Michael Endres while the judges are deliberating - some Mozart and Dvorak. Spread the word, bring your friends, you won’t be disappointed. Christchurch Town Hall, start time 7pm.
